These are a thing of the past with the CONTEC "TFM-Charlie Tango" chain wear gauge. It measures the distinctive points 0.75% or 1% by being placed on the chain. The wear gauge indicates critical wear when the elongated pins can be pushed through the links. Regular replacement not only prevents poor shifting, but also faster wear of the cassette and chainrings.
